As confirmed by agent Drew Rosenhaus, Cardinals' running back Edgerrin James has asked to be released from the team.

After seeing his carries dwindle and his starting job lost to Tim Hightower, James went to GM Rod Graves with the request. Graves, who still believes James is a valuable asset to his team and a 1,000 yard capable back, declined James' request.

"He is not playing now, and there are teams that are banged up at the running back position that he could help. We didn't get the answer we were hoping for," Rosenhaus told the media on Wednesday. "Edgerrin isn't trying to cause any problems. He has had a Hall of Fame career and he has enjoyed his stay in Arizona. But it's apparent that he's probably not going to be back with the Cardinals next season. If that's the case, he can move and help another team and get a start now."

James has only carried 3 times for a 5-yard total during Arizona's last few games.

The downfall of Edgerrin James confirms the fact that was obvious to me a few years ago...James was a little overrated coming from Indianapolis. A product of the Colts' offensive scheme and a guy who benefited from playing with Peyton Manning more than anybody during his days there. Just no the "home run" he was in Indy.-AE

Maybe they're worried someone that can use him against him will pick him up?

if they think hes that good they wouldn't have benched him in the first place.

My guess would be their tired of Edge not performing well but aren't showing commitment to Hightower or Arrington.

I really dont get why they wont let him go.
The Cardinals are 7-3, atop of their division, and on the verge of their first playoff appearance since like 1993. When it comes to the playoffs, an playoff inexperienced team like Arizona is going to need all the veteran presence and insight they can get. Having guys like Kurt Warner and Edge, guys who have been there before, will make the World of difference.

They are keeping Edgerrin only for one reason. He is there to teach the younger backs like Hightower how to become better, they don't care if Edgerrin plays or not he is there just to teach the younger backs and Edgerrin said it himself he is happy with that, he likes helping the younger backs out.

you got to worry about Hightower getting injured to. Anybody can get hurt nowadays. And Edge is not overrated. Didn't he have a good season in Arizona.

any players going to say their happy with it, because they dont wanna batch and complain that their not playing. In fact, from what Im seeing lately, he might be their 3rd string. So if Hightower goes down, they'll probably start Arrington.
