but you shouldn't, it's usually poor value. Trading valuable prospects for 60-80 innings is bad business

The amount of A-Tier prospects the Red Sox have had over the past 10 years is crazy. And these guys, like Anthony Ranaudo, Lars Anderson, Ryan Kalish, Drake Britton, etc, all proved to be not even really MLB level players, yet at the same time could have notched us serious talent in return.
 
 
Look at the Sox/Indians trade a few years back for Victor Martinez. It looked at the time the Indians won the deal, as they got a great young pitcher in Masterson, and a stud prospect in Hagadone (as well as a B/C tier prospect too). VMart wasn't a success really for Boston, as we didnt keep him that long, but Hagadone, the piece that we thought we might regret losing, was nothing special in the bigs. Decent middle reliever, but not someone you'd want in return as the main piece of the deal.
 
That's why you trade prospects away. The Sox have several top guys that are peaking at their prospect status right now, like Matt Barnes, Henry Owens, and Blake Swihart. You move those 3 in a deal, along with someone like Jackie Bradley, and you might be getting close to getting a talent like Chris Sale. Those prospects might be really good (Swihart is a great hitting catcher, and Owens looks filthy. Barnes is a flame thrower too), but they also might be the exact same as Ranaudo, who couldn't even make an MLB roster after being touted as the next Jon Lester.
 
 
Like, its great to have a good farm system. The Yankees right now are an example of why you need one. But if you have a plethora of talent, you can move them. Deven Marrero is an IF and is probably a B tier prospect. With X at shortstop, and Moncada/Pedroia locking down 2B, we don't need Marrero outside being a utility backup defender over the next 6 years. So go move him while his value isn't shit, and get a nice reliever in return

There is no issue with trading prospects, I'm not arguing that. If you need an impact player, I'm all for it. But, the way you're talking is just weird thinking. Just because you have a position of strength in your system doesn't mean you should trade that strength away for 50 cents on the dollar.

Hopefully Chapman can serve as a big brother/mentor to Puig and get him back on track.

I like this deal because the bullpen was a significant problem for the Dodgers last year besides Kenley. If they lose Aroldis next year to FA at least they get a 1st round pick.

Relievers in general are also seeing huge raises. I don't see how being a set up for a year will hurt their chances of getting paid.

Darren ODay and Ryan Madson and Joakim Soria just got paid and they werent closers

These two are better and will get larger contracts when they reach FA whether theyre closing or not

Agree to disagree. I think if being a full time closer one more year means the guy gets an extra $2-3M per year, he's going to want that. 
 
Regardless, it seems like the Reds pussied out of this trade.
