I think it comes down to the grit and grind Grizzly era. Since they dont have any big names in the rafters, or any names at all actually, they need something. This grit and grind team was their best era so why not, you know. Those 4 guys accomplished the most with the Grizzlies that any other players have

If he played for the Lakers for example during 08-10 years, it still wouldnt get retired, but since its Memphis who dont have bunch of success era after era, they're taking the opportunity

He is also one of the all time best perimeter defenders too so im all for it

They will not retire Rudy Gays, he was considered a cancer there, then once he left they started playing better, then once he left Toronto, Raptors started playing better
