TAMPA -- Are the Yankees hedging their bets before the cards are dealt? Or are they simply collecting insurance against a breakdown in the rotation?

The team on Friday signed veteran right-hander Kevin Millwood to a minor-league contract.

"I don't know if he can help us or not," GM Brian cashman said. "It's a low risk/reward. We will see if anything's there.

"If there is, there is. If there's not, then nothing ventured."

In February, Millwood rejected the same deal Freddy Garcia accepted from the Yankees ($1.5 million in base pay if he made the team and $3.5 million in performance bonuses) because Millwood was seeking a major-league deal.

He will start the season in the minors and the plan is for him to provide insurance if needed.

The Yankees have agreed to a deal with the Brewers that sends pitcher Sergio Mitre to Milwaukee for outfielder Chris Dickerson.

The move creates a spot in the Yankees bullpen for Bartolo Colon, who is battling Freddy Garcia for the No.5 starter spot.

Acquiring Dickerson is an indication center fielder Curtis Granderson may not be ready for the start of the season due to an injured oblique.

Dickerson, 28, has played parts of three seasons for the Reds and Brewers. He is a .267 career hitter with eight home runs in 173 games.
