Free-agent pitcher Cliff Lee(notes) doesn't just have batters flailing. He's also got baseball beat writers flummoxed, too. Yahoo! Sports! Tim Brown reported Tuesday night that an industry source told him that the New York Yankees have offered Lee "nearly $140 million over six years."
Meanwhile, the New York Daily News reported that two separate major league officials say no offer to Lee has been made just yet, even though he is the player the Bronx Bombers covet most this offseason.
Brown reports that the 32-year-old lefty is holding out for a seventh year to be included in the Yankees' offer.
The Daily News points out that when the Yanks went after CC Sabathia(notes), a close friend of Lee's, two offseasons ago, the first offer was for six years and $140 million. Sabathia eventually settled for a seven-year, $161 million deal.

Its going to be interesting to see how much the Yankees offer for Lee's services.
