DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings have waived goaltender Ty Conklin.
If he clears by noon Tuesday he will be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Joey MacDonald won the backup job by going 6-1-1, with a 1.66 goals-against average and .934 save percentage after stepping in for the injured Jimmy Howard.
Conklin, 35, has struggled this season, going 3-5-0 with a 3.40 GAA and .878 save percentage. The Red Wings signed him to a one-year, $750,000 free-agent contract in the summer.
Howard is scheduled to return to action Tuesday in Chicago (8:30 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit), after breaking his right index finger in a 4-3 shootout win in Vancouver on Feb. 2.
No surprise really. MacDonald has been great, and Conklin has been quite the weak link all season.

Joey Mac has been great, I can't get over how good he's done since taking over for Howard. I was real worried thinking they would start struggling but they've just kept going and just continue to keep winning, which I hope continues. Hopefully Howard can perform at the same level before his injury.

MacDonald has impressed so far so this makes a lot of sense.

This was bound to happen lol. He's really taking this opportunity to prove himself and make the most out of it. (Joey Mac that is).
Conklin was horrendous.

They really shouldn't rush Howard back before they have too. If he is 100% ready to go then sure, but with Joey playing the way he is, we can afford to let Howard sit a little longer.
