Ordonez returns to Detroit with one-year contract

Outfielder chooses Tigers over two-year deals with other teams

Right fielder Magglio Ordonez will return for a seventh season in Detroit, Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reported Thursday afternoon.

Looking at two-year deals from other clubs, Ordonez chose to return to the Tigers with a one-year, $10 million contract out of loyalty to owner Michael Ilitch. Ordonez is a Scott Boras client.

Ordonez turns 37 in January, and he's coming off a season in which he batted .303 with 12 home runs in 323 at-bats. His 2010 campaign was cut short after fracturing his right ankle in July. The Venezuela native was said to be targeted by the Red Sox and Rangers, as well.

Ordonez's return to right field means Brennan Boesch and Don Kelly likely will compete for a starting job in left.

Glad to see Magglio back for another year, as long as he can stay healthy. He's still a great batter.

x2. He was playing very well, but he is older now so injuries are going to occur at this stage of his career. A 1 year contract is appropriate for a guy like him.

I guess he turned down a few 2 year, 20 millions dollar deals to come back.

Why didn't we give him a two year deal I wonder? Regardless, I'm glad he's back and I 'm sure he will play real well.

Well, if he got hurt again I highly doubt we would want him back for that second year. If he does well this year, we will bring him back again for one year I assume. 2 years is kind of risky.
Would of been like signing Damon for two years, thought it would be great, but Damon didn't play well at all and we would of regretted that second year likely.

Knew this was going to happen. Especially with Werth and Crawford going other places, they needed to get a bat back and Mags, if he can hit like he did, pre-injury, it'll be worth getting him back.

Should be interesting, I'm sure Magglio will leave off from where he did, pre-injury.

Hopefully. Right now I have a 40/60 feeling he won't. Mainly because it was a bit unreal, how well he played, in just a short time.
Who knows, time will tell. I wish they would have gotten Werth or Crawford but as we see, that didn't happen.

Yeah. I was more hoping for Werth because I had a feeling we weren't getting Crawford, but oh well, I still like the moves so far, along with this one. Need to make a couple more and they should be in for a better year.
