Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks with a strained tendon in his right wrist, the team announced on Wednesday.

Teixeira was evaluated on Wednesday in New York by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad and specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser. Teixeira has been advised to have four weeks of complete rest and will not rejoin the Yankees in Florida this spring.

“It’s not what you want, but it’s what you’ve got to deal with,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s life.”

Teixeira was diagnosed with an ECU tendon sprain, which is a similar injury to the one that Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista suffered last season at Yankee Stadium.

With Teixeira out of the lineup until May, the Yankees suddenly have a new lineup headache to contemplate, having already lost slugger Curtis Granderson for 10 weeks to a fractured right forearm.

Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman said that the team will be evaluating both first basemen and third basemen moving forward this spring, since Kevin Youkilis offers versatility in having played both first and third bases.

The Yankees have been looking at Dan Johnson at both infield corners, and could also consider Jayson Nix or Eduardo Nunez to play at third base.

HUGE blow to the lineup. But, hey, this is what a lot of the fans wanted after the playoffs. They wanted to blow up their lineup of basically everyone but Cano. Well, this is what it's going to look like for a few weeks.
