When the Philadelphia Phillies lost right fielder Jayson Werth to the Washington Nationals over the offseason, it was before the club had signed Cliff Lee and there was talk of trying to sign or trade for a big hitter to replace him. Then money got tighter when Lee signed his contract and the team said it would find its right-field replacement in-house.
Ben Francisco, who came to the Phils along with Lee from the Cleveland Indians in Lee's first stint with the team; John Mayberry Jr.; and young Domonic Brown were the three battling for Werth's old spot this spring. But now that number has shrunk to two. X-rays Saturday indicated that Brown has fractured the hamate bone in his right hand, according to the Camden Courier-Post. The paper notes that he was to be in Philly on Monday to get it checked by a specialist and may have surgery to remove the bone, which would take him out of action for four to six weeks.
Francisco is hitting .364 this spring and leads the team with six RBIs. He's also tied for the team lead in homers this spring with Mayberry and Ryan Howard. They each have two. Mayberry is hitting .300 with two RBIs so far.
