The Yankees were hoping that Curtis Granderson would be a difference-maker coming back from his broken right forearm. Just not quite like this.

In his first game back since he got plunked in his first at-bat of spring training, Granderson helped take Felix Hernandez out of the game.

The Seattle ace was mowing down the Yankees and winning the battle of former Cy Young winners with CC Sabathia, with a three-run lead in the sixth inning. That’s when Granderson hit a meek grounder in front of the mound with a man on first. Hernandez threw to second for the forceout, but came out of the follow-through wincing. He’d aggravated a back issue that had bothered him earlier in the season.

Hernandez finished the inning, after allowing a run on a Lyle Overbay double, but was long gone in the seventh, when the Yankees made their big comeback for a 4-3 win before 41,267 at the Stadium.

Sabathia allowed three runs (two earned) in 61/3 innings on 10 hits and two walks while striking out 10. The southpaw allowed a two-run homer to ex-Yank Raul Ibañez that landed in the first row of seats in right. Shawn Kelley (2-0) got the win for finishing the seventh.

Granderson, starting in left field for the first time as a Yankee with the team preferring Brett Gardner in center, scored the Yankees’ first run from first on Overbay’s double, although he finished 0-for-3.

“It was like another Opening Day,” Granderson said. “To get the first ball, to get the first at-bat, the first game out of the way, it’s a bit of a relief.”
