The Dodgers are talking to the Cubs about a trade for both left-hander Ted Lilly and second baseman Ryan Theriot, according to major-league sources.

It is not known whether a deal is close. The Cubs almost certainly would need to include cash to cover part of the nearly $5 million combined that Lilly and Theriot are owed for the rest of the season.

Lilly is a free agent at the end of the season. Theriot is under club control for two additional years.

The Dodgers already have made one trade, acquiring outfielder Scott Podsednik from the Royals. The additions of Lilly and Theriot would further deepen and strengthen their roster.

Lilly would join a rotation that already includes left-hander Clayton Kershaw and right-handers Chad Billingsley, Hiroki Kuroda and Vicente Padilla.

Theriot likely would take over at second base, with the Dodgers possibly sending Blake DeWitt to Triple-A.

The Dodgers seemingly gained momentum in their quests to land Lilly and Theriot when some of the other Cubs’ possibilities faded on Thursday.

The Twins had been interested in Lilly, but instead obtained Nationals closer Matt Capps. The Padres had been interested in Theriot, but instead acquired Orioles third baseman Miguel Tejada.
If they can get Lilly and Theriot they got a fairly solid rotation and some nice depth as well.

ALso, gotta love that LAD outfield: Podsednik, Ethier and Kemp.

Good trade for the Cubs. Lilly was gone at the end of the season and we weren't gonna get anything for him. Theriot is garbage.

1 game and i already hate Theriot. wonderful

Blake DeWitt wasnt doing it for me this year. pretty much a slap hitter.
I was expecting at least some pop. Im sure Wrigley will help him

started off the season horribly defensively, only won the starting job because Belliard sucked in ST, but as the season went on, he got better and better. he still has his moments of yuck, but he's a gamer. he's pretty decent at 2nd and will only get better. and he can play 3rd too.

I love DeWitt. dude never complained, always did what they asked, true pro. i wish him nothing but the best. i'll be rooting for him from here on out.
im happy that he gets a shot to play everyday (i think?) no more platooning for him hopefully, and he's from the mid west

Lilly is better than what we were using. he'll help. may be too little too late, but whatever
Theriot is pissing me off after 1 game lol. he doesnt take a walk? dammit
