Pretty absurd but the Braves will be leaving the 17-year old Turner Field for a new ballpark in Cobb Country, an Atlanta suburb. Construction will begin soon with the expectation the team will play its first season in this new park by 2017. The Braves recently released a map showing a majority of their ticket sales come from the areas north of the city, making construction in Cobb Country a make-sense move for the team.
I'm reading Cobb County will fund a fairly large portion of the stadium construction, with the team footing the remainder of the bill. The Braves' 20-year lease with Turner Field ends in 2016. If you remember, Turner Field was originally built for the 1996 Olympic games and then converted into a ballpark.
More power to the Braves, an organization that is among the best operated in all of baseball. I have a ton of jealousy right now, considering my team is stuck playing in a tin can on the wrong side of the Bay......and the team in Oakland has to worry about their locker rooms being flooded with sewage.
