We will be starting our 5th annual SI player rankings.  Last year we only go to the SF position, but I'm quite determined to get the rankings completely finished this year.

Don't be afraid to share your opinion, whether it's a popular one or not.  We will once again be going 10 spots deep at all 5 positions.

Please remember these two things, please vote on the polls and vote for the best player, don't be a homer.  Most of the polls will be open 24 hours, but if the first place vote getter gets 5 or more votes than the second vote getter than I will close the thread if I'm around. Nola and I will be guys running the polls in order to try to get this done this time around.

Remember, this is based on who is currently the best player, not who has the potential to be the best.  Who would you take today?

2015 SI C Rankings

3) Dwight Howard

It's the land of opportunity

I didn't realize Teagz was voting for him in previous polls, assumed I'd be the only one on this one. It takes two to tango.

But something has to be said about the drastic turnaround in the Cavs defense after acquiring him

Lol I went to edit my post and accidentally deleted it.

I think there is something to say for it as well, and he's definitely part of the reason. But I think there is something to say for other factors as well. It happens to coincide with when the Cavs got a rejuvenated and revitalized LeBron, and a more focused and intense Cavs team in general. What about the additions of the two swings from New York? Better understanding of the system? How about the level of talent they faced offensively? Prior to the trade 38% of their games were played against the top 10 offensive teams in the league, post trade only 22% of their games were against those top 10 teams.

Furthermore, we didn't see some miraculous turnaround defensively. Before the trade they were 27th in the league defensively, post trade they were 17th in the league.

This one is tough.  We're at the point where every player has some sort of detractor.  I"ll go with Hassan Whiteside though.

If Drummond wasn't a piston he wouldn't even be in consideration

not that it will change anyones mind, but Detroit allowed nearly 4 points more per 100 possessions with Drummond on the court rather than with him off.

For someone who brings only defense, that's not a ringing endorsement.

Which is exactly the reason guys like you and nola aren't voting for him.

Cause a center who is one of the best rebounders in the league, plays good (not great) defense, and is effective offensively (regardless of how he gets his shots, minus FT shooting) isn't anywhere near consideration to be a top ten center. Ya'll are right.

I don't even like delving into stats but he is top 10 among centers in the following:
Estimated Wins Added
Value Added
PER
Rebound Rate (1st offensively)
PPG
FG% (and yes I know TS% is awful but that's obviously due to FT)
RPG
BLKPG

And like I said he is top 20 in the league in defensive rating. Sitting at 11. Which you can laugh off if you'd like, but go look at the list. All of the guys in front and behind him are certainly considered good defenders in this league.

I just fail to see how he "isn't even in consideration." Obviously he has his deficiencies like every other player in the world, I've never said he is a perfect player on either end of the floor, nor do I think he is at all. But not even considering him as top ten is just fucking stupid, I'm sorry. Dude had a good coach for the first time in his career last season while playing for a pitiful team the last 3 years, and still has put together a pretty impressive body of work. Including your boy Coach K keeping him on the USA  roster last year.

But go ahead and vote for a guy who played half a season, a year removed from the d-league if you really want to. Excluding Drummond there is like 4 guys I would still take over Whiteside.

I just kind of thought on it and figured no, he wasn't the same Noah we have seen the last few years, but we aren't talking about the 4th or 5th best C either. We are talking about the 9th best, and I think Noah was more than good enough to be in that slot.
