2008 Fantasy Football Rankings, Version 1

By Andrew Perna

The homestretch of the 2007 season is upon us, so now is the time for fantasy football players to begin looking at who will be the top players at each position next year.

Quarterbacks

1. Tom Brady QB, NE – How could you not take him first?

2. Tony Romo QB, DAL – Tons of tools, but not Brady yet.

3. Peyton Manning QB, IND – No longer the consensus No. 1 QB.

4. Carson Palmer QB, CIN – Still behind Peyton, Tom and Tony.

5. Drew Brees QB, NO – Remember the good, not the bad.

6. Ben Roethlisberger QB, PIT – Benefited from more responsibility.

7. Matt Hasselbeck QB, SEA – A healthy running game could help in ’08.

8. Jon Kitna QB, DET – You know he’s going to sling it around.

9. Derek Anderson QB, CLE – Can he replicate 2007?

10. Jay Cutler QB, DEN – Broncos hope he continues to mature.

11. Brett Favre QB, GB – Can he continue to defy Father Time?

12. Marc Bulger QB, STL – He’d like to forget 2007, so would his owners.

13. Jake Delhomme QB, CAR – He’s still their No. 1, when healthy.

14. Jason Campbell QB, WSH – Showed flashes of greatness in 2007.

15. Philip Rivers QB, SD – Turner has another season to work with.

16. Vince Young QB, TEN – Rushing + Improved Passing = Gold.

17. Eli Manning QB, NYG – 2008 is make-or-break for him

18. Donovan McNabb QB, PHI – He’s great – when 100% healthy.

19. Jeff Garcia QB, TB – Nothing spectacular but makes few mistakes.

20. David Garrard QB, JAX – He makes even fewer mistakes than Garcia.

Running Backs

1. Joseph Addai RB, IND – Even better than Edge?

2. LaDainian Tomlinson RB, SD – Norv Turner be damned.

3. Adrian Peterson RB, MIN – Imagine him getting even better.

4. Brian Westbrook RB, PHI – The Eagles may become a runners.

5. Willie Parker RB, PIT – If only he could find the end zone.

6. Steven Jackson RB, STL – This season was a fluke, right?

7. Willis McGahee RB, BAL – Someone is scoring in Baltimore.

8. Ronnie Brown RB, MIA – Does it all, higher if healthy.

9. Clinton Portis RB, WSH – Ladell Betts wasn’t even a threat.

10. Marshawn Lynch RB, BUF – Rookie of the Year, not named Adrian.

11. Edgerrin James RB, ARI – Not quite the Edge of old, but good enough.

12. Maurice Jones-Drew RB, JAX – Fred Taylor was good, but he’s old.

13. Frank Gore RB, SF – Let’s hope 2008 is more like ’07 than ’06.

14. Marion Barber RB, DAL – Feature back in a great offense.

15. Larry Johnson RB, KC – Always an injury risk.

16. Thomas Jones RB, NYJ – A few TDs and he’s much higher.

17. Reggie Bush RB, NO – Deuce’s return will help him.

18. Jamal Lewis CLE, RB – Rejuvenated in Cleveland.

19. Travis Henry RB, DEN – If he’s not suspended, he’s a starter.

20. Shaun Alexander RB, SEA – Too good to go away this easily.

21. Rudi Johnson RB, CIN – Remember him?

22. Laurence Maroney RB, NE – Defenses will force the Pats to run.

23. Ryan Grant RB, GB – Emerged as the Packers’ best runner.

24. Kevin Jones RB, DET – Mike Martz needs a running game.

25. LenDale White RB, TEN – Better than anyone thought he’d be.

26. Cadillac Williams RB, TB – Things were great before he went down.

27. Cedric Benson RB, CHI – Unless Peterson shines in his absence.

28. DeShaun Foster RB, CAR – A passing game would help his cause.

29. Brandon Jacobs RB, NYG – He could help keep Eli afloat.

30. Justin Fargas RB, OAK – Might have earned himself a starting gig.

31. Fred Taylor RB, JAX – He’s still hanging around.

32. Julius Jones RB, DAL – He gets his yards.

33. Deuce McAllister RB, NO – Hopefully he’ll be ready for the season.

34. Jerious Norwood RB, ATL – Warrick Dunn is getting up there.

35. Chester Taylor RB, MIN – Showed what he can do in Adrian’s absence.

36. Adrian Peterson RB, CHI – Could move up with this season’s opportunity.

37. Earnest Graham RB, TB – Chances are Cadillac will stall.

38. Ahman Green RB, HOU – Texans' running game is always risky.

39. Kolby Smith RB, KC – Played well in his debut, might lead to more.

40. Maurice Morris RB, SEA – Played decent in relief of Alexander.

Wide Receivers

1. Randy Moss WR, NE – What a resurrection.

2. Terrell Owens WR, DAL – Romo’s No. 1 target, until he flips.

3. Reggie Wayne WR, IND – Finally Peyton’s No. 1 receiver.

4. Chad Johnson WR, CIN – He can talk, as long as he produces.

5. Larry Fitzgerald WR, ARI – Only getting better.

6. Braylon Edwards WR, CLE – Can the Browns keep this up?

7. Plaxico Burress WR, NYG – Was injured all season, still produced.

8. T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR, CIN – Some prefer him over Chad.

9. Marques Colston WR, NO – Quietly, still above average.

10. Torry Holt WR, STL – Injuries can never keep him down

11. Wes Welker WR, NE – Brady’s safety valve could be your No. 1.

12. Anquan Boldin WR, ARI – Dominant when healthy.

13. Greg Jennings WR, GB – Brett Favre’s new favorite target.

14. Steve Smith WR, CAR – The Panthers need to get him a healthy QB.

15. Javon Walker WR, DEN – Injuries seem to follow him.

16. Dwayne Bowe WR, KC – A consistent QB could be his key to elite status.

17. Donald Driver WR, GB – Needs more end zone touches.

18. Santonio Holmes WR, PIT – Big Ben’s best deep threat.

19. Roy Williams WR, DET – Kitna needs more time to get him the ball.

20. Joey Galloway WR, TB – He’s what, 40?.

21. Brandon Marshall WR, DEN – Developed relationship with Cutler.

22. Calvin Johnson WR, DET – Remember, he’s still a rookie.

23. Kevin Curtis WR, PHI – If McNabb’s healthy, Curtis is his No. 1.

24. Chris Chambers WR, SD – A full season in San Diego means a lot.

25. Donte’ Stallworth WR, NE – Anyone is dangerous in New England.

26. Roddy White ATL, WR – Depends who will throw him the ball.

27. Laveranues Coles WR, NYJ – I think he needs Pennington back.

28. Patrick Crayton WR, DAL – Romo will get used to him in 2008.

29. Hines Ward, WR PIT – Former Super Bowl MVP has some juice left.

30. Andre Johnson WR, HOU – Injuries keep him from being MUCH higher.

31. D.J. Hackett WR, SEA – Hasselbeck liked him while he filled in for others.

32. Deion Branch WR, SEA – But Matt also has this former SB MVP.

33. Bernard Berrian WR, CHI – Good for a couple of long touchdowns.

34. Shaun McDonald WR, DET – A product of a once-potent offense.

35. Lee Evans WR, BUF – I want him to be so much higher.

36. Reggie Williams WR, JAX – Has a good rapport with Garrard.

37. Reggie Brown WR, PHI – Shows flashes, then disappears.

38. Justin Gage WR, TEN – Young’s favorite target thus far.

39. James Jones WR, GB – If Favre’s run continues – any GB WR is good.

40. Joe Jurevicius WR, CLE – Product of the resurgent Cleveland offense.

Tight Ends

1. Antonio Gates TE, SD – Best of the TE's.

2. Kellen Winslow TE, CLE – Leapfrogged Witten, Gonzo and Cooley.

3. Jason Witten TE, DAL – Romo’s top fall-back option.

4. Chris Cooley TE, WSH – Campbell’s favorite target.

5. Tony Gonzalez TE, KC – Could be his final productive season.

6. Donald Lee TE, GB – A fairly consistent option at TE.

7. Dallas Clark TE, IND – Will bounce back after an injury-plagued ’07.

8. Jeremy Shockey TE, NYG – Tough as nails.

9. Benjamin Watson TE, NE – Comes in huge waves

10. Heath Miller TE, PIT – He needs to send Big Ben some chocolates.

11. Vernon Davis TE, SF – He needs a QB to get him the ball.

12. Randy McMichael TE, STL – A healthy Bulger will make a difference.

13. Todd Heap TE, BAL – Would be in the top three in a better offense.

14. Leonard Pope TE, ARI – A decent option on a pass-heavy team.

15. Tony Scheffler TE, DEN – Improving just as Cutler is.

Kickers

1. Rod Bironas K, TEN – Unless the offense improves, he’ll excel.

2. Jason Hanson K, DET – Horrible red zone team means a ton of FG's.

3. Stephen Gostkowski K, NE – Kickers in top offenses are valuable.

4. Nicholas Folk K, DAL – Ditto here for the NFC’s top offense.

5. Phil Dawson K, CLE – Elder Brown has a steady leg.

6. Mason Crosby K, GB – Favre can’t reach the end zone on every drive.

7. Robbie Gould K, CHI – You knew he couldn’t duplicate 2006.

8. Shayne Graham K, CIN – Maybe he should celebrate after each field goal.

9. Josh Brown K, SEA – One of the league’s strongest legs.

10. Jeff Reed K, PIT – One of 2007’s most accurate.

11. David Akers K, PHI – Falling down the list for a variety of reasons.

12. Jeff Wilkins K, STL – Assuming the Rams’ offense is healthy.

13. Adam Vinatieri K, IND – Struggling in 2007, missed most XPs in NFL.

14. Jason Elam K, DEN – Always good for a 50-yarder.

15. Kris Brown K, HOU – Was a top-six kicker midway through 2007.

Defense/Special Teams

1. New England Patriots – The league’s top offense and defense.

2. Dallas Cowboys – The class of the NFC in both categories.

3. San Diego Chargers – Led the league in INT's through Week Twelve.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers – Among the best despite injuries in 2007.

5. Tennessee Titans – If they keep Albert Haynesworth, watch the sacks pile up.

6. Minnesota Vikings – If only they defended the pass…

7. Seattle Seahawks – Surprisingly consistent this season.

8. Green Bay Packers – A young but also veteran defense.

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The reason they win games.

10. New York Giants – Watch them break a leg, literally.

11. Indianapolis Colts – Good, but not great – yet.

12. Chicago Bears – Remember when they were the class of the NFL?

13. Jacksonville Jaguars – Heady unit that’s a lot better in real-life.

14. Philadelphia Eagles – One of the best corner duos in the game.

15. Baltimore Ravens – Ray Lewis and company have a lot of work to do.

some of those I dissagree with...just my opinion.

Jacobs.
A few WR's
QB's and TE's is accurate.
Same wit kickers.
Not quite sure about a few Defenses there. i think Giants should be higher, but thats just me.

19. Jeff Garcia QB, TB – Nothing spectacular but makes few mistakes.

20. David Garrard QB, JAX – He makes even fewer mistakes than Garcia.
This makes no sense, Garrard make fewer mistakes then Garcia yet is rated lower.

That was one of those QB's I wasn't so sure about, but most of the list is good.
