TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama coach Nick Saban said Wednesday that tailback Mark Ingram is unlikely to play for the top-ranked Crimson Tide against Penn State.

Saban said that last season's Heisman Trophy winner was able to run Tuesday and his left knee is "improving every day," but he probably won't play against the Nittany Lions.

"We'll continue to progress him day to day," Saban said. "He hasn't had any swelling or problems. If he can continue to progress -- I would say he's probably not going to be ready to play this week. He might be ready by the game, but he won't be able to practice enough.

"After that, maybe we have a chance to get him back if he continues to progress."

The Tide plays host to No. 19 Penn State on Saturday night in its first real test of the season.

Ingram sat out the opener after having an arthroscopic procedure to repair an injury sustained in practice early on opening week.

Backup Trent Richardson had 10 carries for 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns to go with three catches for 46 yards in the win over San Jose State. He only played the first half.

They do have Trent Richardson, in all honesty, who I believe is the most talented of the backs. This hurts though. Big time. I feel they didn't lead onto how serious of an injury this really was..

Shouldn't be a big deal. Penn State isn't as good as last year and Trent was the #1 RB recruit in 2009.

Shouldn't be a big deal, Trent is better than Mark and Alabama should win either way.

"That doesn't mean a miracle's going to happen," Paterno said. "We come home, and we'll be a better team for having played the game."

From the school paper.

It's going to be a HUGE test for Bolden. I look forward to seeing how he handles it though.

They don't need Ingram to win this game...but sooner or later, they will face someone that they will need him.
