We will be starting our 5th annual SI player rankings.  Last year we only go to the SF position, but I'm quite determined to get the rankings completely finished this year.

Don't be afraid to share your opinion, whether it's a popular one or not.  We will once again be going 10 spots deep at all 5 positions.

Please remember these two things, please vote on the polls and vote for the best player, don't be a homer.  Most of the polls will be open 24 hours, but if the first place vote getter gets 5 or more votes than the second vote getter than I will close the thread if I'm around. Nola and I will be guys running the polls in order to try to get this done this time around.

Remember, this is based on who is currently the best player, not who has the potential to be the best.  Who would you take today?

Decided to keep Duncan on the PF list.

I'm gonna go Bosh or Gasol here. Not sure yet.

Duncan isn't a PF. Hasn't been for at least a decade.

I talked to Sal about it, think he will get changed.

Why though? If you want to get technical, Duncan is listed as a PF literally everywhere. You want to tell me Tiago Splitter was starting at the 4 all this time? I think Sal should leave it as is. He's s 4.

He's always been a 4, and next year, they'll run a 2 PF system. Duncan's never really been a "center"

They used to start the games together. Splitter was hurt a lot this year. Regardless, one of the biggest criticisms you got last year on this was placing players where YOU thought they started rather than their more obvious, natural position.

Don't pull this shit again

The only reason he's listed as a PF is because he began his career starting next to David Robinson and because it's easier to make the claim that he's the greatest PF of all time compared to the greatest C of all time.

if this were truly the reason, why wouldn't people do this for other centers too?

Find me another situation where a 7 footer who operates entirely like a center was drafted onto a team with a great center already in place, and maybe the same argument would be made.

He shoots far more mid range jumpers than the typical center but okay

Serge Ibaka?

Not saying he was paired with a great center (lol Perk), but if the Thunder didn't trade Jeff Green for Perkins, Ibaka would have been at the 5 the entire time most likely. And then they drafted Adams and traded for Kanter to play the 5, so Ibaka is still a 4.

I sent this to Sal, but I'll share it here as well.
He spent 67% of his minutes at center last year, 36% of San Antonios center minutes as well. He actually only played 24.5% of his minutes alongside Splitter, 546 minutes with Splitter out of 2,227 minutes he played. Last year it was just 31% of his minutes and he played 100% of his minutes at center. Two really small numbers. I mean it's your call to make, but he's definitely a center, I've always viewed him as a center, and Popp has even said as much.
But I'll expand on it, I'm not going to say Tim Duncan isn't a center just because the Spurs had Tiago Splitter, two reasons why: 1) Tiago has only played in 56 games a season the last two years 2) even when healthy he has played just 20 minutes a night.

Want a third reason? 3) Splitter played just 12 minutes a night with Duncan this past season. Just 12. Just 14 a night the year before.

So yes, maybe Splitter has been hurt and maybe that's why the stuff I quoted is so drastic, but as you can see above even when they both play they spend little time together. Essentially the beginning of the first and the third, then they don't appear together again. Tim Duncan is a center, always has been a center, and will continue to be a center until he retires.

Well when you say they only play 14 minutes a game together, that's a significant chunk considering Duncan only plays about 28 minutes a game.

My point is this: he's regarded as a PF by almost every NBA-affiliated website. You can try to "outthink the room" all you want, but like I said, that contributed greatly to this flaming out last year. Don't be that guy again

Am I trying to out-think the room?
