Ken Rosenthal, of FOXSports.com, is reporting that an unknown team has claimed Mets' lefty Billy Wagner off of waviers.

Citing major-league sources, Rosenthal speculates that given then amount of money left on Wagner's deal, it has to be a high-revenue club as the claiming team. Wagner is owed roughly $3.6M for the year and an $8M option for 2010 ($1M buyout). At 38 years old and fresh off Tommy John surgery, Wagner made his 2009 debut Thursday, pitching a perfect 8th inning.

Wagner has a 'no-trade' clause in his deal. The Mets now have until 1pm ET Tuesday to either trade Wagner's rights or pull him off of waivers. -AE

Interesting. He hasnt pitched for a year, the Red Sox have been known this year for taking on reclamation projects.

The Boston Red Sox picked up reliever Billy Wagner(notes) off waivers from the New York Mets after he waived his no-trade clause in order to join them, but the deal may completely fall apart before Wagner ever gets close to Beantown, according to the Boston Herald.

Wagner's agent, who has one of the best names in professional sports, Bean Stringfellow, apparently asked the team to agree to not pick up the $8 million club option for next season and to not offer Wagner arbitration, thus making him a completely free agent this off-season. The Red Sox, of course, don't want to do this because what if they've got a total diamond of a guy coming off of Tommy John surgery?

Meanwhile, Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon(notes) is publicly not outrageously excited about Wagner joining the team's bullpen and says that if it were his decision, he might just stick with the gang that's out there and not upset any of the precious chemistry. That'll surely make Wagner feel mighty welcome if he ends up in Boston.

Papelbon only has one pitch and really hasn't been the same since that 07 season.

The media is blowing what Papelbon said WAY out of proportion..if they read what he said, and actually reported it, then they'd know it wasn't about Wagner personally.

That said, though off topic, Papelbon is having an off year. He doesn't have just one pitch he just, for some ridiculous reason, refuses to throw his other two. It pisses me off when he just throws fastball after fastball, it's like he has no confidence in his other pitches.

not getting moved. Rosenthal of FoxSports.com says that Wagner used his full no-trade clause.

However Sportscenter claimed a little while ago that the two sides were still in discussions and that the Mets were trying to talk some sense into Wagner to waive his no trade clause.

ESPN's Buster Olney said he expects a deal to be announced soon.

I think its time for the Mets and Wagner to move on. It sheds some payroll off of us and we get to start to clean house and start anew.

It's more about Wagner wanting to close than it is him not wanting to come to the Sox

Ya he wanted to go to the Sox because they are in the Penant Race, but he didnt want them to pick up the Option for 2010, and hes only right now supposed to play every 3 days so thats one reason why he didnt want to get traded.

The Sox will end up getting a prospect anyhow in the draft when they get a compensation pick.
