With GTA 5 & the babe tournament and breaking bad I completely forgot about this. Anyway, so I skipped O-Line, I figured after we do Defensive Line players we can do o-line guys. But I want to know if you guys think we should do polls for individual positions or just group team offensive lines together. Your call on that one.

I went Marty B and Watt. Ware's been absolutely dominant so far (probably the best over three games, overall) but 3 games is too small of a sample size. I'll probably rate him at the 4-5 range.

At the same time, 3-4 DE and 4-3 DE are completely different positions. 3-4 DE's are essentially defensive tackles. Watt is the exception, and his ability to transcend his position is what ascends him to the top spot, imo.

yea I had to double check some names while I was doing the poll. idk why I thought Ware was an OLB. A lot of people list those edge rushers as DEs though so idk, lol.

Justin Smith at DE, and don't know why he isn't listed as an option

You don't need to be explosive to be a great DE. In the same way Wilfork is a beast at DT, Smith requires so much attention due to his strength that it allows guys like Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith to get great rush pressure. Underrated in terms of "getting sacks", but he's a beast and is either the best or 2nd best DE, and a Top 5 DL in the NFL

I think he's thought of as a DT because he always has Smith next to him.

So even though they run a 3-4, and Aldon plays OLB, that makes Smith a DT? He's as much of a DE as Watt, just San Fran wants their run stoppers to be their DL, while Houston wants their run stoppers to be their LBs

That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that people know Watt is a DE because they constantly refer to him as one because his skills transcend that of a 3-4 DE. Smith, while he does get some sacks, makes more of the between the tackles plays, which is more of a DT type of play. I'm talking about what the general fan would perceive his position as. And having a great pass rusher line up next to you can help hide your actual position as a 3-4 DE.

Let's be honest. The 3-4 DE is a DT. They don't line up outside. They don't often hold the singular objective of outside containment. They're there to plug gaps, whereas the real purpose of the DE position is outside containment/pass rush.

Depends on the scheme. NE runs a 4-3 base, but we sometimes swing Jones inside and run a 3-4 look. Sometimes we line up in a 4-3, with a 3-4 intent. Kelly contains outside from DT spot, Nink drops back.

Well, of course there are, what's the special word, wrinkles in any scheme. It depends on the versatility of the player, and obviously Jones can handle those duties.

As great as Justin Smith is (best defensive lineman in the league, imo), I have a hard time believing he could consistently handle outside contain.

Wade Phillips runs a one gap 34 scheme, which allows his linemen to attack the backfield. That's why guys like Watt and Jay Ratliff were able to actually put up tangible stats. Linemen in a traditional 34 occupy linemen, which allow the linebackers to put up the stats.

I'm sure most of you know that, just supplying information.

Also, Greg Hardy might be the best pure 43 end in the league, and he's not on the poll. It's difficult to rank players when you throw ends from all schemes into one poll imo.

No I think of him as a DE -- i just tried to limit the list for #1. Next poll will include him and a few more guys.

Would you guys be okay with doing separate polls for 3-4 DEs and 4-3 DEs?

Yes, 4-3 is edge rusher with containment responsibilities. 3-4 is a gap plugging, willing to take on double teams position.
