Im going with the Penguins this year to come on top in the division. I think the Rangers/Flyers will give us a run for our money followed by the Devils and the Islanders will round out the division with one of the worst records in the NHL..

Not gonna be very easy with the other teams like you said. With that said they are my pick as well.

Yeah Rangers will be good because of Lundqvist and will have a strong defense but not a great offense. Flyers will have a strong offense but not a great defense/goalie combo. in my opinion they traded away the wrong goalie, should have kept bob. if the Pens lock down defensively to help out Fleury and Vokoun we should have no problem winning games.

Beat reporter Aaron Portzline gathered 61 thoughts on departed Columbus Blue Jackets star Rick Nash, paying tribute to his jersey number.

Portzline goes deep, but this little bit ranks as the juiciest:

There were instances last season, before the trade stuff started, when other NHL players were directly advising Nash to leave. One player tells The Dispatch: “I skated over to him before a faceoff and just told him ‘you have to get out of here. Put your agent to work and get it done.’” Many were surprised last February to learn that Nash had asked to be traded. From what I can glean, players around the league were only shocked that it took him so long.

Portzline also discusses other forces that prompted Nash to bite the bullet, including his father.

There are a lot of other really interesting bits in Portzline’s lengthy post, but his take on where Nash might end up in the New York Rangers lineup is also quite intriguing:

No. 4 = Wonder which line Nash will play on with the Rangers? Most expect him to step in with Brad Richards, a playmaker extraordinaire. My hunch is he’ll fit best with Derek Stepan, but – as a guy who sees the Western Conference almost exclusively – I’m not entirely keyed in on Stepan’s game. Nash needs the puck to be successful. He doesn’t find space in the offensive zone and rip one-timers; he hauls it to net. This will be interesting.

The Flyers’ bad luck with injuries continues to roll along.

According a report from Swedish newspaper Helsinborgs Dagblad, defenseman Andreas Lilja will miss the next four months after having hip surgery. Matias Strozyk translates the story with these quotes via Twitter.

“I’ve had problems for a couple of years but usually the pain eased over summer,” Lilja said. “Not this year, so I needed surgery.”

“Now I have a new hip and the difference will be big when I return. Not least mentally, since I can now move without pain.”

Lilja tells the Swedish paper that the procedure he had done could extend his career by five years. Meanwhile, CSNPhilly’s Tim Panaccio could not reach Flyers GM Paul Holmgren for comment on the injury, but a source with the team confirmed to him Lilja’s status. With how labor talks are going, Lilja might not miss any games.

Lilja now joins Andrej Meszaros (Achilles’ tendon) and Chris Pronger (concussion) on the shelf with injuries.

The Flyers will now look to start the season with Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Nick Grossmann, Erik Gustafsson, Luke Schenn, Marc-Andre Bourdon, and Bruno Gervais on their back line. They’d better hope Ilya Bryzgalov has a big bounce-back season.

New York center
Brian Boyle will be a healthy scratch
for the third consecutive game when the Rangers face the Bruins on Tuesday.
Clearly, he’s not happy about it.
“I know I can be a good player and effective player in this League and on this team,” he said after the morning skate. “It’s infuriating sitting out, it’s awful.
“And it’s pissing me off a lot.”
Getting scratched against the Bruins probably has an extra sting for Boyle, a Boston native.
He’s never really had success against the club — 14 games, zero goals, minus-5 rating — and now must suffer the ignominy of being benched in his hometown.
But it’s not like the scratch comes without reason.
Boyle’s struggles this season are well documented, going beyond his ugly stat line (no goals, one assist, minus-3) as Rangers head coach John Tortorella took aim at Boyle’s poor performance in various facets of the game, including two he values highly.
“[Boyle] hasn’t done a good job killing penalties; I don’t think he’s done a good enough job blocking shots,”Tortorella said last week.
While it might sound like the relationship between player and coach is at an all-time low, Torts was quick to point out he hasn’t written off Boyle entirely.
“When Brian gets in, like I said, I hope he never lets me put myself in this decision again,” Tortorella explained. “”I believe Brian will be a big part of it, I just don’t know when I’ll change the lineup.”

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has never been accused of being afraid to make a big move; however, such a move isn’t in his plans at the moment.
“I think we have a nucleus of good, young players,” Holmgren said yesterday, per CSNPhilly.com.
“To talk about disrupting that is not something that I am in favor of doing. We have not played exactly how I thought we would have played.
“We’re missing some key people [Scott Hartnell andAndrej Meszaros] right now. We can’t use that as an excuse. Other teams have similar issues going. We’re going to ride this out for now.
“I don’t anticipate doing anything. Obviously, there is lots of talk going on right now. Everyone is doing their due diligence, but I don’t foresee us making a move.”
The Flyers (6-7-1) won last night in Winnipeg for just the second time in eight games away from Wells Fargo Center. Their six-game road stretch continues Friday in New Jersey.
Holmgren’s tune could change if his team still isn’t clicking as the April 3 trade deadline approaches, but with all the offensive talent the Flyers boast, the best move may be giving them time to figure it out.

Not that surprised to see the Devils in first. Old goalies are perfect for the short season. I can see them easily in the top 4 for playoff contention.

New York Rangers rookie forward
Chris Kreider
has been sent to the club’s AHL affiliate in Connecticut,
according to ESPN’s Katie Strang
.
Kreider, 21, had appeared in seven games with the Rangers this season, scoring 1G-1A-2PTS while averaging 10:18 of ice time per game.
The former Boston College standout was a healthy scratch last game — a 4-3 shootout loss to the Islanders — with Strang reporting he’s being sent to the Whale so he can play, rather than watch the parent club from the press box.
Kreider burst onto the scene during last year’s playoffs, appearing in 18 games while recording 5G-2A-7PTS,breaking a 59-year-old NHL record for most postseason goals scored before making his regular-season debut.
With Kreider’s demotion, it’s looking more and more likely that fellow rookie J.T. Miller will remain with the Rangers.
Miller, 20, has played in five games this season. Upon playing No. 6, the first year of his entry-level contract will kick in.
The Rangers don’t play again until Sunday — a home date against the Washington Capitals (6 p.m. ET, NBCSN) — so the club has until then to decide Miller’s fate.

Well, I haven't followed the Rangers as much as I hoped for this season but everything I've heard on the radio, fans aren't entirely on board with the move; but they're not necessarily surprised either. If he didn't get sent down, he was just going to wind up in the doghouse due to his issues defensively.

Philadelphia celebrated Presidents Day in style on Monday as the trio of Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek and Matt Read paced the Flyers to a 7-0 win over the New York Islanders.

The line was stellar throughout the afternoon and gave hope that the Flyers — who had only been averaging 2.38 goals per game this year, 24th in the league — found a dynamic top line to boost their offense.

Voracek finished with four assists, Read with 1G-2A and Giroux with 2G-1A, the latter of great significance as it was Giroux’s first three-point performance of the year.

Giroux opened the scoring just 26 seconds into the game, with the assists going to — who else? — Read and Voracek. The goal also stood as the deciding tally, Giroux’s first game-winning goal of the season.

As for other key Flyers performances on the day:

– Daniel Briere finished with 2G-1A-3PTS, nearly doubling his output for the season. Coming into today, Briere had just five points through 12 games.

– Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 19 shots for his first shutout of the season.

– Brayden Schenn finished with 1G-1A-2PTS, his second multi-point game of the season.

– Zac Rinaldo‘s third-period tally was his first point and goal of the year.

Not much to say from the Islanders’ side of things, other than they’ll want to throw this performance in the garbage and forget about it entirely.

The John Tavares-Matt Moulson-Brad Boyes line finished a combined minus-9 while Evgeni Nabokov was on the hook for all seven goals, on just 25 shots.

Oh, and in case you’re curious, it was 16 years ago that Philly’s famed “Legion of Doom” line of Eric Lindros, John LeClair and Mikael Renberg
combined for 16 points in a 8-5 win over the Ottawa Senators
