Man its a shame his legacy is coming to an end at this time. He was a great coach.

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is near death, a source close to the Paterno family told The Citizens' Voice.

On Saturday afternoon, Paterno's wife, Sue, called close friends of the former coach to the State College hospital where Paterno has been undergoing treatment since Jan. 13 for complications from his fight against cancer.

Paterno, 85, wanted to say a final goodbye, Sue said, according to the source.

Those close friends included his longtime secretary. Members of Paterno's extended family were also summoned to the hospital.

His son, former assistant coach Jay Paterno, cancelled an appearance in Reading, Pa., telling organizers 15 minutes before the scheduled start that he would not be able to make it because "his wife" was sick.

One report said Paterno had been taken off a respirator Saturday morning. Another report said he had already received last rites. Thus far, neither report could be confirmed independently by the Voice.

A Paterno family spokesman said in a statement issued following The Voice's report that doctors have "characterized his status as serious."
Man that sucks.

Wow, sad to see a legend go. Sucks that it was on a sour note at PSU.

No one will forget Paterno and his legacy.

Looks like I may get an early +1 in my death pool this year.

He's officially dead.

May Joe Paterno be remembered for all of the things he did over his great 85 years, impacting the lives of not only the young men he coached, but also his great work to help the community around him. While it is impossible to sway anyone's opinion on his involvement in the Sandusky affair, let's not let that overshadow what was a great life and unfortunate death of a great man. RIP Joe Pa.

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has died. The college-football legend was 85 years old when he succumbed in his battle with lung cancer.

Paterno's diagnosis was revealedr in mid November, shortly after he was dismissed from his duties as coach of the Nittany Lions. Paterno's ouster came in the aftermath of the arrest of Jerry Sandusky, a longtime Paterno lieutenant facing more than 50 counts of sexual abuse against children. Amid evidence that Paterno had been notified of the abuse but had done little beyond his legal obligation to prevent it, the Penn State board of trustees voted to dismiss the longtime coach in November. The scandal reverberated beyond college football, and sullied a reputation that had once seemed unimpeachable — particularly in central Pennsylvania, where Paterno, or "JoePa," was revered.

During his 46 seasons coaching Penn State, Paterno racked up 409 wins -- the the record for a Division I football coach. He guided his teams to national championships in 1982 and 1986.

The Brooklyn native is survived by his wife, Sue, and their five children.
May he Rest In Peace.

My prayers and thoughts go out to the Paterno family.

Has he passed or not?

Conflicting reports all over the place.

Not yet according to his son, but it's almost inevitable.

CBS really fucked up, you can't report someone is fucking dead until they are.

This is f'd up. Terrible that you would report someone dead when they really aren't.

It's just the state of reporting and honestly it stinks.

Being the first to break a story shouldn't be the #1 priority.

Should be the last, especially when it is a damn death.

Nobody will remember who was the first to break a death story, but everyone will remember who was the one to fuck it up.

Paterno family spokesperson, Dan McGinn, tells ABC News that reports of his death at this time are "false." He is deteriorating quickly.

The family is deciding whether they pull the plug or not. If he can talk still I would let him choose.
