The entire league felt george and the lakers are destined to be together, and didnt want to give up a lot for a rental, especially since it wouldnt put them over the GSW or Cleveland hump. And Indiana didnt want him in cleveland winning a title potentially because its a slap in the face to their entire base

Enter OKC. Presti decides to go all in and trade for him as a hail mary to get russell to sign long term, and maybe even george. Plus it gets them out of the oladipo commitment. Dipo is a nice player, but presti wasnt going to want him on the roster when russ and pg leave so it was a pretty easy decision to make the move
