The Detroit Pistons are pursuing Stan Van Gundy with a lucrative offer to assume complete control of basketball operations and coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Pistons are trying to compete with the Golden State Warriors, who are aggressively pursuing Van Gundy for their coaching position.

Van Gundy has expressed a strong interest in the Warriors' opening, but it's immediately unclear how intrigued he is with the pursuit of Pistons owner Tom Gores.

The Pistons have a far less appealing roster, but the chance to build his own organization is a challenge that the Warriors can't offer him.

Van Gundy, 54, has a .641 winning percentage as a head coach in stops with Miami and Orlando. Van Gundy reached the NBA Finals with the Magic in 2009.

Would never offer someone complete control, but that's just me.

Just want to know why

I think i would trust svg over an owner who's basketball prowess is less than ours
Not trash talking gores or lacob, but most owners, pretty much all owners, arent exactly gurus

i like it because he can develop greg and drummond as players and as a duo. he seems like a smart basketball mind too.

I'm not talking about the owners. Giving him total control essentially makes your GM a puppet. There needs to be a clear distinction from coaching and personnel decision makers. If your GM has to answer to your coach, that's going to cause problems. Is a guy with total control as the coach willing to go through necessary tough rebuilding years, or will he panic with win now moves?

Too risky to me. I just want my coach to coach, and that's it. I also don't trust coaching minds to evaluate talent.

Also, to add on, I don't think SVG's coaching ability warrants the need to give him total control. He's a good coach, but I wouldn't put him on the Pat Riley or Doc Rivers level.

If you want him to move to detroit you gotta give him a carte blanche

Im ok with giving him control

Detroit might not even be that far off from contention, especially in the east

One our beat writers said a deal is close and could be done within the next 2 days.

Woj said he will bring Otis Smith in as his GM most likely.

Woj also said GS met with him Monday, and they felt when leaving he was going to take Detroit's deal.

I'd post links but I'm on my ipad. All on Twitter tho.

If a deal's reached in Detroit to make Stan Van Gundy president/coach, he's looking closely at hiring Otis Smith as GM, sources tell Yahoo.
