Ed Reed has begun pushing the Ravens for a new contract.
"I'm not making it a big deal," he said. "[But] I think it needs to be taken care of." Reed has three years remaining on a six-year deal, and he lacks leverage with his retirement talk and the rising chance that he'll miss a good chunk of the regular season following hip surgery. He "realistically" believes his return won't come until "October, November and December." Jul. 7 - 10:17 am et

Great news for Ravens fans. I have a friend who loves the Ravens and needless to say when the ramblings about Reed possibly wanting to retire, he was nervous, but now this gives some promise to that team. They need secondary damn bad.

Hahaha. From a fellow AFC team who has seen them a lot lately in the playoffs, etc. I agree. He is such a valuable player in the defensive secondary, he makes big plays and he really is the quarterback in the secondary as much as Ray Lewis is the heart and soul.

Vikings acquire needed WR Camarillo, ship CB Sapp to Dolphins
Published: Aug. 25, 2010

The Minnesota Vikings aren't waiting around to beef up their ailing receiving corps.

The Vikings acquired wideout Greg Camarillo from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Benny Sapp, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Wednesday, one day after Minnesota signed veteran free-agent receiver Javon Walker. The Vikings reportedly also explored a trade for San Diego Chargers holdout Vincent Jackson but balked at the Pro Bowl pass catcher's contract demands.

The Vikings had little choice but to add depth: Pro Bowl pick Sidney Rice will miss at least the first half of the season after having hip surgery Monday, and Percy Harvin hasn't practiced much because of recurring migraines, leaving quarterback Brett Favre without his top two targets with just two weeks left in the preseason.

Camarillo rebounded from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2008 to catch 105 passes for 1,165 yards and two touchdowns over the last two years. He is more of a slot receiver than a deep threat, which would make him a more realistic fit to replace Harvin than the 6-foot-4 Rice, whose leaping ability and athleticism contributed to a breakout season last year.

Harvin returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since he collapsed during a workout last week. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, remained there overnight and didn't travel with the team to San Francisco for Sunday night's preseason game.

Harvin had some additional tests performed this week, but it's still impossible to predict when the headaches will resurface, and tests are still being done. He missed one game during the regular season last year, but he still racked up more than 2,000 total yards and won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

In Miami, Camarillo became expendable with the offseason acquisition of Pro Bowl pick Brandon Marshall. The Dolphins also have Brian Hartline and Davone Bess at receiver.

Camarillo was a starter the past two years. He made 50 catches for 552 yards and no touchdowns last season, but he'll be best remembered in Miami for his 64-yard touchdown catch in overtime against the Baltimore Ravens for the Dolphins' lone victory in 2007.

Sapp will provide depth for Miami at cornerback behind second-year starters Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. Veteran cornerback Will Allen is coming back from knee surgery and recently underwent a follow-up arthroscopic procedure, and he's expected to be sidelined until at least the end of the preseason.

Sapp played in all 16 games for Minnesota last season and started seven when Antoine Winfield went down with a foot injury. Sapp filled in admirably, but he fell behind youngsters Asher Allen and Chris Cook early in training camp in the race for the nickel job.

ALLEN PARK - The Detroit Lions have acquired another cornerback who was a high draft pick but has yet to live up to expectations.

The Lions traded tight end Dan Gronkowski to the Denver Broncos in exchange for second-year cornerback Alphonso Smith. A second-round pick last season, Smith (who was the 37th overall choice) played in 15 games for the Broncos as a rookie.

The Lions traded for cornerback Chris Houston, another second-round pick, in the off-season.
It's a good deal for the Lions because they weren't going to keep Gronkowski anyway. A very good receiver, Gronkowski still needs to improve his blocking. The Lions were already set at tight end with Tony Scheffler (who they acquired in a trade with Denver), Brandon Pettigrew and Will Heller.

What this move does mean, though, is that a Lions cornerback who was probably going to make the Lions roster this morning will now be cut to make room for Smith.
Will be an absolute steal if this kid pans out.
