Boston's season came to an abrupt end Sunday, so outfielder Jason Bay is setting his sights on free agency rather than playing in the ALCS.

The Providence Journal said the Red Sox and Bay were close to a contract extension twice this season, but now it remains to be seen whether the team will try to retain him.

"I've gotten to this point, and as much as I would love to come back here, I make no bones about that ... I'm a little bit interested in going through the whole process, seeing what it's like and seeing what's out there," Bay told the Journal. "That really isn't going to sink in for awhile. I'm still sitting on this loss for a bit."

Sunday's Boston Globe listed San Francisco as a possible destination for Bay.

I dont think Bay will go to any other team. I think he will stay because the Sox trully want him back and he was a major cog for them early in the year. I think for Bay it all comes down to winning and with the Red Sox he has a good opportunity to do that.

"For me, it's been the winning," Bay said. "You get that in some other places. But after being here, the rabid fan base and playing for the Red Sox, there's really not that experience in a lot of places. When I got here, baseball, not that it wasn't fun before, but it was really fun again. I kind of enjoyed that."

He can be that bat the Giants need if they do seriously decide to pursue him. Bay along with maybe 2 more bats could be a huge addition to this Giants squad.

this isn't that bad for Boston if he leaves, then they'll be able to go after Holliday

Well the Giants are gonna attempt to resign Freddy Sanchez, thats their first priority, and Brad Penny who might cost a bit. The Giants have money to use but I'm guessing they aren't trying to use it because of Zito and Rowand...

^Ya but we probably need a pretty good DH (Vlad, Delgado maybe). We probably need a consistent pitchers as well. But imo the Jays need to get Scutaro back.

Bay isnt going to the Blue Jays. Blue Jays need to get younger rather than older.

The Blue Jays need a true leadoff hitter who has speed and with an OBP of like .380. They also need a #3 starter if they plan on keeping Halladay.

Scutaro had 379 OBP this season. He has decent speed but he just doesn't run that often.
