He was 85 and had a stroke last fall. He pitched for the Tigers and Phillies and won 224 games in his career. When he retired, he was 2nd on the all-time strike out list with 2855. Among his accomplishments were a perfect game and another no-hitter. He was known for his durability, having pitched 200+ innings in 11 consecutive years.
Post baseball, he represented his native Kentucky in both the US House and Senate. He served 12 years in each chamber and retired in 2010.
On a personal note, I met Sen. Bunning at the Bob Feller Museum in Iowa a number of years ago. He was very personable and willing to talk.
Rest in peace, sir. Condolences to family and friends.
