MINNEAPOLIS -- Joe Mauer joined an elite group of players when he won his third American League batting title this past season.

Now the 26-year-old Twins catcher has become a member of another illustrious club -- that of MVP winners.

Mauer was named the American League Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers Association of America for the first time in his career on Monday, receiving 27 of the 28 first-place votes to easily beat out the Yankees' duo of Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter for the honor.

Mauer finished with 327 points, well ahead of Teixeira, who had 225, and Jeter, who had 193. Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who received the only other first-place vote, was fourth with 171 points.

Mauer became the fifth player in Twins history to win the MVP Award. He joined teammate Justin Morneau, who took home the honor in 2006, as well as Zoilo Versalles (1965) Harmon Killebrew (1969) and Rod Carew (1977).

He also became just the second catcher in the past 33 years to be named MVP. Texas' Ivan Rodriguez (1999) is the only backstop besides Mauer to take home the honor since Yankees catcher Thurman Munson won it in 1976. The last catcher to win National League MVP honors was Cincinnati's Johnny Bench in 1972.
Congratz to Joe Mauer.

Teix and Jeter kinda canceled each other out -- but Mauer was definitely great this season

so Mauer gets 27/28 1st place votes.

the other player to get than 1 remaing 1st place vote was not jeter nor tex, but Miguel Cabrera

what the hell?
the same Cabrera who saw his team blow a huge ass divisional lead to Mauer got a vote for 1st place?
thats absurd

He can win it next year too while Tex and Jeter continue to get more rings. Maybe he'll join us in 2011 when he really wants to be a winner.

This was even worse than 06... Mauer missed over a month, how valuable can he realy be especially once he got humiliated in the playoffs? And especially since he and the Twins went 0-10 this year against us.

I really SMFH at you

What does a team record against a team have to do in consideration for an individual award? Also, the fact that he missed a month makes his stats even more outstanding. Your Yankees lost the award to a player who missed more than a month and still outperformed them, how does that make you feel? In addition, of course the Twins got "humiliated" in the playoffs, they don't have the money to buy a team of all stars...

Show some respect and give Mauer his due credit

There are plenty of owners that have the money to get better FA's, they just choose to pocket the money themselves. How cool of you to bring up money, that's just weak... Jeter has 5 rings, and Teix has 1 while Mauer does not have not even 1... He's a winner all right, especially on SI.

EDIT: What speech did Mauer make at the Championship Parade? Oh wait....

And how cool of you to bring up championships...which is a team effort. A player can't go out and get a winning team himself...

You win a championship with a good team. Its not Mauer's fault the management didn't build championship caliber team, you can't say he doesn't deserve the award because he's not on a team full of all stars...

pm7, don't bother man. I've, numerous times, picked apart his nonsensical posts and given him reasons for why Mauer deserved to win; as well as why CC and Burnet couldn't hold Greinke's jock strap, to use a DH34ism.

Until he wants to own up and answer for that, his comments are irrelevant to everyone other than himself.
