Red Sox catching prospect Daniel Flores died Wednesday of complications from cancer, according to team president/CEO Sam Kennedy. Flores, 17, had been in Boston receiving treatment.

The Red Sox signed the highly regarded switch-hitting catcher out of Venezuela this past summer to a signing bonus of $3.1 million.

Baseball America rated Flores the second-best prospect in the international class. He had a power bat and a strong arm, according to scouting reports.

This is a real shame.  No one knows what kind of person he would have become, baseball aside.  At only 17, he wasn't even old enough to vote in this country.
Rest in peace, young man.  Condolences to family and friends.
