Kolb Gets Second Chance

[background=transparent]Despite little time to prepare and a bit of a sting lingering from being named the backup quarterback, Kevin Kolb was still able to come off the bench and lead the Arizona Cardinals to a Week 1 victory. [background=transparent]He figures to have a tougher task ahead of him on Sunday, when he leads the Cardinals into Foxborough to take on the New England Patriots, who have yet to lose a home opener at Gillette Stadium.[/background][/background]

[background=transparent]Arizona paid a steep price to acquire Kolb from Philadelphia in July of 2011, dealing cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2012 second-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for the quarterback.[/background]

[background=transparent]Injuries limited Kolb to nine games in 2011 and he was beaten out for the starting job during the preseason by John Skelton, a 2010 fifth-round pick who started the other seven games for Arizona a season ago. [background=transparent]Skelton kept Arizona in last Sunday's meeting with Seattle, but the Seahawks led by three points with time winding down in the fourth quarter when he was forced out of the game due to an ankle injury.[/background][/background]

[background=transparent]Kolb came off the bench and finished off the drive that Skelton started, going 6-for-8 passing for 66 yards while capping the march with a six-yard touchdown pass to Andre Roberts with 4:59 remaining.[background=transparent]Seattle drove to the Arizona four-yard line with under 30 seconds to play, but quarterback Russell Wilson's pass attempt was dropped in the end zone by wide receiver Braylon Edwards.[/background][/background]

[background=transparent]Kolb was the big story after the game, drawing praise from his teammates and head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who pointed out that his quarterback was prepared and ready to play.[/background]

[background=transparent]Strong safety Adrian Wilson agreed.[/background]

[background=transparent]"I want to talk about Kevin Kolb. Let's talk about how poetic that was," Wilson said following the game. "The guy didn't get any reps in practice really, John (Skelton) got all the reps, and he came in there and led the game-winning drive. Defensively we just went out there and did our job. I think Kolb's chances have about run it's course, he better make the most of this opportunity. Good news for him: He's not facing one of the top defenses -- Bad news: He's playing against the Patriots. Hopefully the guy can get it together, like real quick.

This division has done better than expected after 2 weeks. Cardinals & 49ers at 2-0, and Rams & Seahawks at 1-1. I'm not saying the 49ers have to worry, but the Rams have shown they are a different team this year under Coach Fisher, and the Seahawks seem to hover around .500 year in, year out. The Cardinals are the least threatening in this division, imo.

I think the Rams are going to be solid this year. They just look like a completely different team under Fisher.

Sure do, look like a completely different team already. They hung in there against the Lions and beat the Redskins. Bradford is looking good this year.

SEATTLE — Replacement field judge Jeff Sardorus, a former Pac-12 official who was part of the crew for the Week 1 game between the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, had officiated Seahawks practices each of the last three seasons (though not 2012) despite the fact that it's a direct violation of the NFL's supposed rules regarding conflict of interest, according to Albert Breer of NFL.com

Breer reported that the NFL's internal memo to the replacement officials indicated that "effective immediately, officials will not work NFL team scrimmages during the week."

A Seahawks spokesperson told Shutdown Corner that the team had no comment at this time. The NFL has also declined comment. A Seahawks spokesperson told Breer that Sardorus' one-time employment with the team was "plausible."

What about the integrity of the game Goodell?

No, there is a problem because he was once on the payroll. It's the same deal with the ref in the Saints game yesterday, if you are in anyway or ever were associated with a team in a game you are officiating, then you should be sent packing for another official. I'm not saying they'd cheat the opponent in anyway, it's just not worth the headache. Heck, it's even an NFL rule.

Yes. Look at the secondaries he plays the remainder of the year: Cardinals, Dolphins, Packers, Patriots, Cardinals, Bills, Vikings and Buccaneers. Sam Bradford is a great QB, he's never had the team and coaching around him to be successful so people just use the past as the reason why he won't keep it up. He was the first overall pick for a reason. This Rams team already looks ten times better than last year.

They definitely do. I actually was worried about the game before playing for the main reason that Fisher is their coach. That and he and Schwartz used to be on the same staff, so they have that familiarity with each other. That defense is different too. Finnegan is already making an impact for them, as was expected. It actually wasn't a terrible defense to begin with. They have some quality pieces with Chris Long, Robert Quinn, James Laurinaitis, Quintin Mikell. They may not get many wins, but I think they'll be in them more often than not.

After 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver generated a furor at the Super Bowl by saying that he wouldn’t accept a gay teammate, he apologized and said that he hoped to “learn and grow” from the experience.

Culliver took a step in that direction on Monday. He spent the day at the Los Angeles offices of the Trevor Project, an organization that provides crisis and suicide intervention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. Culliver also met with the organization’s executive director on Sunday and paid to have the Trevor Project’s national education trainer fly in from New York for Monday’s session.

Culliver says he wants to become a volunteer for the organization and a spokeswoman for the Trevor Project said that he could work on programs designed to assist young people. She also said that the organization didn’t think that Culliver was insincere about his motivations for reaching out to the organization only after he created the firestorm in New Orleans.

“Chris is a young guy himself,” spokeswoman Laura McGinnis said, via theSacramento Bee. “He reached out to the Trevor Project. And that’s a good thing.”

While Culliver wouldn’t be doing this if not for his comments at Media Day, an outcome that helps make life easier for struggling youths is a positive one no matter the genesis. Hopefully that’s what’s at the end of the road for Culliver’s association with the Trevor Project.

49ers Have Already Sold 75% Of Tickets At New Stadium

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers have already sold three-quarters of the seats at its new Silicon Valley stadium, thanks in part to the team's Super Bowl run.

The 49ers said Friday that fans and corporations have bought $403 million worth of tickets at the Santa Clara stadium that's set to open next year, when the team leaves Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

The new $1.2 billion stadium requires fans to buy seats that cost between $2,000 and $80,000, then purchase season tickets that cost $850 to $3,750 each year. The most expensive seats in the 68,500-seat stadium have already sold out.
