why not?

If you want to give up your top prospect for a closer you know you arent going to keep, then go right ahead

Because it's basically collusion.

Yea, the Yankees deceived the Cubs by trading them the closer they needed to win a World Series and then outbidding everyone else to sign him back. Such assholes.

first off, there is no such thing as outbidding the yankees

second, he could have taken less $$ to go to NYY still. i agree with dan -- this screams collusion kinda. similar to how for the nba, isaiah talked to Horford about signing in Boston, and then the celtics at the trade deadline decided not to trade for him... because they didn't want to lose players and picks for a guy they knew was going to sign

Chapman i'm pretty sure had a verbal agreement with Cashman that he'd re-sign if they paid up, so they got assets for him. Smart move by NYY but it's kinda collusion

It's kind of fucked up... lose respect for both parties here because it could be conspiracy but I don't think you need to rule against it... The Cubs were getting a rental anyways it doesn't matter where he was going to sign in free agency.

So funny that when it's the Yankees it's wrong, but when it was Lester with the Red Sox it was fine.  SMH

I was against it with Lester too, but I never actually believed he would go back to Boston either.

nobody's complaining about trading away an upcoming UFA for assets

it's when a team trades an upcoming FA during the trade deadline, and then sign that player that it looks shady.

Boston didnt sign Lester after we dealt him so there is clearly no collusion smh

He's saying you would have been okay with it had Lester signed back, like most Red Sox fans were preaching about leading up to free agency. I'd say it's hard to argue, can't imagine any Red Sox fan would have had an issue with it then.

Also, to GMFs point that the Cubs aren't upset about how things turned out, obviously they are not, but this isn't about them.

I'm all about player movement, and having the freedom to choose where they play if they're a free agent at whatever they can get, but this kind of situation is completely different.
