Tyler Sash, a former Giants safety who played on the Super Bowl XLVI-winning team, died Tuesday morning. He was 27.
The Iowa state medical examiner’s office confirmed Sash’s death to the Daily News and said an autopsy would be performed Wednesday. The cause of death is unknown.
“We were all deeply saddened today to hear of the passing of Tyler,” the Giants said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tyler’s family and friends and all the Hawkeyes he was so proud to represent.”
KCCI-TV in Iowa reported Sash was found at 8 a.m. Tuesday by a family member. Sash was born in Iowa and played for the University of Iowa.
Sash was a sixth-round pick by the Giants in 2011. He spent two seasons with Big Blue before he was cut at the end of training camp in 2013. He did not return to the NFL after appearing in 23 games for the Giants.
“It’s very sad,” Victor Cruz told The News. “We still don’t know how it happened. It’s tough.”
Jason Pierre-Paul expressed shock over the news in a post on Twitter and Instagram.
“I can’t believe this right now!!!! RIP Tyler sash. What a great guy you was, you in a better place now,” Pierre-Paul wrote.
Sash was arrested in May of 2014 and charged with public intoxication and interference with official acts in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Sash was riding a scooter around 1:30 a.m. with the lights off and ignored police orders to stop. Police had said he led them on a four-block chase before leaving the scooter and running into the woods. When he was found, he refused to comply with officers’ request to leave the woods and he was shocked with a stun gun before being taken to jail.
He was later fined $65 after pleading guilty to public intoxication. The charge of interference with official acts was dropped in exchange for the plea.
So sad. Was a solid player for us that year too. RIP Tyler
