OU should have been in the playoffs tbh. Who wouldn't wanna see Baker/Mixon/Perine/Westbrook light it up!?

Maybe if they weren't trash for the first month of the season they would've made it

Alabama would have covered versus both. Agreed that OU is better than Washington but based on what both teams did during the season, I had no problem with Washington getting in and would've had Michigan above Oklahoma too

I feel like Fleck could have gotten a better gig than Minnesota.
Like what?

There are very few universities in as great a location as the Twin Cities. They are an above average B1G w/o him, have a new stadium, and have $180 million worth of athletic facilities underway.

Other Gopher sports are on the rise, and fast. Hockey is top 10, and basketball has the #4 RPI right now. Excited to see what Fleck can do

Here are their recruiting class rankings in the Big 10 only the last few years:

2017: Last
2016: 8th
2015: 13th
2014: 11th

Apparently high school football players aren't interested in the success of their hockey and basketball program

Fleck reminds me a lot of Brady Hoke.

And they happened to contend in the West in each of the last 4 years despite less than stellar recruiting. Which helps make my point as to why MN is a great job for Fleck, he's a great recruiter.

Recruiting rankings are way overrated. David Cobb, Hageman, BBC, Maxx Williams all made the NFL from MN and were 2 star recruits

Recruiting rankings tend to lead to overhype which tend to lead to 31-0 playoff games

I wouldn't classify what they've done as "contending", and it goes without mentioning how putrid the Big 10 West has been/still is. They have come within a few games a couple years, but were never a threat, because they always lose to the actual good teams in the Big 10.

In their breakout 9-4 season this year, they didn't play Michigan or Ohio State, and beat three teams with a winning record (Washington State, Northwestern, and Colorado State). Not sure how they're on the rise.

This wasn't a breakout season, they made a NY6 game 2 years ago. Who cares that they didn't play Michigan or OSU, neither of those teams made the B1G championship game. They were up double digits at the half to the 2 that did and anemic QB play spoiled their chances in both.

MN has a damn good defense, just need to get a passing game to go along with a dynamic running attack and they can make some noise.

And what was one of the things Fleck created at WMU??? A dynamic passing attack

If you want to ignore the fact that they didn't have to play the two best teams in the conference, and try to downplay that with the conference title game non sense, that's fine. If you actually think Wisconsin and Penn State were the class of the Big 10 this year, well that's certainly interesting.

They finished the year 8-5 during the year they made a New Years bowl, and then followed it up with a 6 win year, because that's what happens to teams who don't recruit well and don't infuse their program with talent.

Maybe they'll follow this 9 win season up with a strong 2017, considering they have two quality opponents next year, maybe 3 depending on ones opinion of Nebraska, but debating the merits of the Minnesota Football Program is hilarious, because they're clearly not a good program right now. They're a middle of the road Big 10 team, that plays an incredibly poor division. PJ Fleck is using them as a stepping stone. If he has success, he'll be gone in 2 years.

They're also in the middle of a sexual assault scandal, which certainly does not help them.

If you reread the original post, I said they were an above average B1G team, so not sure what you're debating here. The point is Fleck can take them to the level of a Wisconsin or Penn State team.

Penn State was a better team than Ohio State this year whether you want to admit that or not. Ohio State made the playoff based on recent success which clearly paid no dividends. Michigan was the best team in the B1G but also lost their bowl game, so sure they avoided a bullet there but really what's the difference, a loss to PSU counts the same as a loss to UM.

They made the playoff based on their recent success in 2016, yes. Beating three teams that finish the regular season in the top 10, with a single loss from a blocked field goal returned for a TD will do that for you.

Ohio State played horribly against Clemson, but they were clearly deserving of making it based off their regular season.
