Florida quarterback Tim Tebow took a significant step toward possibly playing in Saturday's game at LSU when he returned to practice on a limited basis Tuesday.
Although Tebow was given the go-ahead by doctors to practice in a limited controlled environment, he has not been cleared yet to play in a game,UF coach Urban Meyer said Tuesday.
"I want to make that clear. He has not been cleared to play in the game Saturday night. Absolutely not," Meyer said. "I don't think that (decision) will happen for some time yet."
When asked about a possible time frame, Meyer said, "They're (the medical team) discussing that right now. I don't think that will be determined until later in the week after they see how he progresses. From everything they tell me, it's a symptomatic injury. If something shows up after practice or during practice. ... I asked him during practice and he said, 'I feel great.' If symptoms show up, then that delays the whole deal."
Tebow was cleared to practice Tuesday by a team of doctors that included Dr. Patrick Jacobs, a neurosurgeon from Shands at UF, Dr. Bayard Miller, a neurologist from Shands, and Dr. Mr. Mickey Collins, the assistant director of the sports medicine concussion program at the University of Pittsburgh. Meyer said Collins stayed and monitoredTebow at practice.
Meyer said there was a medical team of 15 that met Tuesday and unanimously agreed Tebow should be cleared to practice.
"Those were top-shelf people, and there was a football coach with a whistle around his neck who was a little out of place," Meyer said. "Tim had a big smile on his face (when they cleared him). He's very (eager) to get going. He wanted to get active again and get going."
Tebow practiced in full pads and helmet. He saw considerable time with the No. 1 offense, sharing the reps (about 50 percent) with No. 2 quarterback John Brantley. He has been cleared for everything in practice except contact work.
"Tim did very well," Meyer said. "Obviously, no contact. This time of year, it's not really full-contact days. He had a good day. I'd say (he participated in) 80 percent of practice and he did well. He was a little rusty. He hasn't done football (since sustaining a concussion in the second half of the Sept. 26 Kentucky game).
"He looked like Tim out there today. Obviously, practice is a lot different than what's going to happen Saturday night. There's still a lot of evaluation to go."
Meyer said Tebow likely will be cleared for some contact work today so the medical team can further assess his progress.
"Dr. Collins said if it was a linebacker he'd like to see him go through some (full) contact," Meyer said. "Obviously, we're not going to do that. There are ways of doing some drill work where there's nothing to the head, maybe a little contact to his chest. That would be (today)."
Tebow has shown no symptoms of a concussion since early last week, when Meyer said he still had a slight headache. He started doing conditioning work Sunday and lifted weights Monday.
Now, it's a matter of monitoring Tebow as he goes through practice the next few days to determine if he's cleared to play Saturday night.
Even if he's cleared, a decision will have to be made whether or not he does play.
"The first thing you've got to do is make sure he is 100 percent medically cleared," Meyer said. "Then you cross that bridge (whether to play him or sit him out Saturday night)."
Meyer said he and the UF coaches will try to come up with a game plan that would help keep Tebow out of harm's way if he does play. They also must have a plan if Tebow does not play, Meyer said.
Meyer said even if Tebow is not going to play, the senior leader and team captain will travel with the team to Baton Rouge.
