Lakeland's Bill Castle cruises to victory in his 400th game

LAKELAND - The Lakeland High football team scored two touchdowns on its first two plays from scrimmage Friday night on the way to a 60-0 victory against Lakeland Tenoroc.

The game was Lakeland head coach Bill Castle's 400th at the school.

The two touchdowns came off runs of 32 and 60 yards by senior running back Ben McCroy. McCroy ran the ball only twice and was untouched on both trips to the end zone. Lakeland rushed for 303 yards on 26 attempts, averaging 11.6 yards-per carry.

Lakeland was also perfect through the air, as they went 4 for 4 for 63-yards using three different quarterbacks. The only passing touchdown was thrown on a running back pass by Demarcus Staton.

Lakeland scored 37 in the first quarter, and immediately sat the starters. The defense held strong, allowing only two earned first downs the entire game. The Dreadnaughts defense hasn't given up
a point so far this season.

Defensive end Davonte Gilmore accounted for one sack, a safety and a fumble return of 7 yards for a touchdown.

"It was a good game for us," Castle said. "I'm glad that everyone on the team got an opportunity to play."

Rodney Watson, of Lakeland rushed for 38 yards on two attempts, and had one touchdown of 27 yards. Demarcus Stone rushed for 35 yards on four attempts and added one touchdown. Delvon Hagan rushed for 40 yards on three attempts.

Junior Javares McRoy returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown.

Lakeland leaves for California on Wednesday as it faces Concord De La Salle on Friday.

"We're going up against a very strong team. It's going to be a tough game." Castle said.
