12:05pm: ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that Upton will earn $16MM in 2018, $18MM in 2019, $21MM in 2020, $23MM in 2021 and $28MM in 2022. MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports that Upton also receives full no-trade rights with the deal.

11:39am: The Angels announced today that they’ve agreed to a new five-year contract with left fielder Justin Upton. The 30-year-old Upton had been weighing an opt-out clause that would’ve allowed him to walk away from the remaining four years and $88MM on his contract, but he’ll now remain under contract with the Halos through the 2022 season. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that Upton receives an extra $18MM with the extension, bringing the total value of his deal to $106MM over five years (Twitter link). In all, he’ll earn just over $150MM from 2016-22. Upton is represented by Reynolds Sports Management.

If the Halos can get some pitching, they'll be in a good position to be more competitive. I'd like to see them bring Brandon Phillips back for at least one more season.

I must have missed this news. Upton is a good player. The Halos need pitching though....
